This trial compares 800 mg Gleevec versus daily 37.5 mg Sutent for pts who have stopped benefitting from 400 mg Gleevec. The recruitment is 200 patients.
This trial has sites in Boston, Philadelphia, Hong Kong, and Italy...
Data from this trial will allow researchers to make a direct comparison of side effects and efficacy of 800 mg Gleevec versus Sutent. Also, if genotyping is being conducted on these patients, it will allow researchers to correlate results with primary mutational status.
Data from this trial could be an initial step in personalized treatments if we learn that certain genotypes respond better to one treatment arm or another.
This is not to be viewed as one treatment arm is "better" than the other, as if it is a competition. Rather, each treatment, 800 mg Gleevec or Sutent, has different qualities regarding side effects or how it stops mutated KIT, or angiogenesis. A scientific trial collecting data in a controlled fashion is the best way to learn more about these two options, to make a direct comparison of risks versus benefits, and how certain subtypes of GIST are affected by each.
