Aromatherapy

Several studies have revealed that aromatherapy may not only help you relax, it may even speed up your recovery from surgery. The various essential oils used in aromatherapy are derived from plants such as lavender, frankincense, chamomile, and peppermint.

They're usually either inhaled or applied to the skin in dilute form. The scents can stimulate brain activity that induces biological responses, such as relaxation.

In fact, the scent of vanilla is often used in operating rooms. Not only can smelling certain scents help to relax you, but aromatherapy also may help diminish pain, ease symptoms of nausea, and even speed recovery from surgery. Try inhaling scents of lavender, vanilla, and chamomile or apply the oils to your skin in dilute form. The scents stimulate brain activity that can induce biological responses, such as relaxation.

If a scent doesn’t appeal to you, stop using it and try something else. Avoiding unpleasant smells also can help minimize tension.
