Have had the fortune of having top MDs in my life but this one was by accident. Went to Danbury Hospital in 2005 with severe anemia. The endoscopy indicated 2 cm tumor and CT scan showed it to be 11.5 cm. I was immediately admitted and after further tests, Dr. Pierre Saldinger removed the GIST, along with ileum and 1/3 of colon. Have been on 400 mg of gleevec daily and NED since. Went off gleevec for 3 months in 2006 for an aortic graft installation plus aortic and mitral valve replacement.
Had a conversation with Ron DeMatteo at Sloan and when he heard Pierre Saldinger removed my GIST, he said, "...you could not have had a better surgeon!" Dr. DeMatteo and Dr. Saldinger did their fellowship together at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

I also had my surgery in Danbury with Dr. Zuccala.
My GIST team at Danbury Hospital includes David Barenberg, gastroenterologist and Vincent Rella, oncologist. Laura Choi repaired bilateral hernia present since 2005 GIST surgery.
