Here in the heartland, I have found a sarcoma specialist, Dr. Mohammed Milhem, at the University of Iowa whom I highly recommend. He is new to the U of I, and is trying to build a sarcoma program at the Holden Cancer Center. I had my fist visit with him last week and found him to be knowledgeable, willing to listen, and prompt to respond to any questions I had via email.
Everything went smoothly. No lost records or disks or slides. No long waits. Everyone was kind and friendly.
For those of you in the mid-west who are seeking a specialist and cannot travel to the other cancer centers, I highly recommend him. I like the concept of a team of specialists making decisions about my case.
I see Dr. Mohammad Milhem at the University of Iowa Holden Cancer Treatment Center. Dr. Milhem only sees patients w/GISTs 2x a week, the rest of his time is spent in research.
(I)Fired two local oncologists, left a fairly competent surgeon, traveled to Oregon and to Atlanta to see GIST specialists and finally ended up in Iowa City where I see Dr. Milhem who is a sarcoma specialist. I also had surgery last year in February. Dr. Hoshi was my surgeon. We drive an hour, spend the day, and come home weary of the long waits but glad to have immediate results and not have to wait for days for the results of blood work or scans.
I live in SE Iowa and go to Iowa City for tests. I see Dr. Berg, as he was the one most familiar with GIST before Dr. Milhelm arrived on staff. Marilyn from Iowa sees him (Milhelm) and is happy with him. We both like the fact that we have blood work, CT scan and Dr. appointment on the same day. By the time we get into the doctor he has the results of lab work and scan. It is nice not having to wait. Dr. Berg almost functions as a PCP. He sees me as a whole and is concerned with other physical problems and recommends other tests for me to have done locally. Early on, I wanted to get a second opinion from one of the 5 major treatment centers. He was fine with that and helped me choose the one to see. Hope that gives you some input.
