We held the 4th Houston GIST Summit on September 22, 2012, which had a day long program of talks ,and an Ask the Expert sessions, time to talk and meet fellow patients. The videos from this wonderful day will be available on the GSI website sometime in October.
INVITATION FOR THE 2013 GISTS PLANNED FOR SEPTEMBER 14, 2013. Check back to find out the line up of speakers
Plans WILL BE underway soon for what promises to be the biggest GIST Summit yet! In 2008 we had our first Houston meeting, and 28 people came, and by 2012 we registered 100+ people and there is still room for more!
Luckily the rooms we book are pretty flexible, and we have plenty of capacity if more want to come - and if there is a real stampede (bearing in mind this is Texas), ALL ARE WELCOME!
It looks like being a very exciting day, and we are looking forward to meeting with all of you, friends old and new.
The location is the 8th floor of the Cancer Prevention Building (CPB), which is on Holcombe Boulevard along from the main building in which we normally attend clinics. .
But for those that like to know, the formal address is: Rooms 1-8, 8th floor of the Cancer Prevention Building at 1155 Pressler Street, Houston 77030
You reach the rooms by finding the landmark "The Star" and taking elevator Q to the 8th floor. MD Anderson website has guides around the hospital.
Pressler St is just around the back of the building, where the car park will probably be located. The front of the CPB faces onto Holcombe Boulevard
HOWEVER we will be emailing every participant directly with details on finding the rooms, and there will be lots of sign posts and arrows!
Looking forward to seeing you there.
There is no charge for this meeting and breakfast, lunch, dinner and refreshments are included.
Venue: MD Anderson.
Please see http://www.gistsupport.org/gsi-community/gists.php for further details and registration information. There is now a link from GSI's homepage's left-hand column direct to the GISTS meeting information and pre-registration, so you can successfully register online via a fill-in form OR by sending an e-mail OR a snail mail.
To come to the Houston meeting you do NOT need to be a patient at MDA!!! Not only that, you do NOT have to be a member of GSI (although we are such a friendly helpful bunch I can't imagine NOT being a member).
The meeting is open to all with an interest in GIST. Tell people about it when you go to clinic!
Regarding accommodation for the Houston meeting - hotel reservations should be made by meeting delegates direct with the hotel concerned.
Car parking at M D Anderson for all day in car park 10 over the road (Holcombe Boulevard) from Rotary House and the conference venue but if you use valet parking at Rotary House it will cost $15 for the day. As it is quite a hike from car park 10 - MD Anderson being as big as a small city in itself, paying an extra few dollars and having the car near the venue and someone else parking your car for you seems like a good deal to me.
Here are the details:
The following hotels have special rates for MDA patients and run shuttles to MDA. I could try to make a block booking and get special rates if there is enough interest. Please note the prices I quote below may be a bit out of date - I got them from people's emails over the past year. Not having been to any of them I cannot make a recommendation myself, sorry. If you do book, please make sure they will run a shuttle to the hospital on a Saturday!
