Bio of Dr. Chunnan Liu:
I grew up in Beijing, China. I became interested in cancer research when I was in medical school. The challenge of finding what may cause cancer inspired me. After I graduated from medical school, I came to the United States to further my training in cancer research. After spending six years in a project looking into how the Epstein Barr virus might cause Burkitt’s lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a PhD degree in microbiology and immunology. Although searching for the unknown always poses exciting challenges, I realized at the cross road of my career that my talents and passion truly lie in day to day medicine, in helping people and their families in fighting cancer and providing compassionate care during the most difficult time of their lives. Therefore, I decided not to further pursue an academic career. After I finished my subspecialty training at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, I came to California.
I am proud to join the Kaiser Permanente medical group, the largest multispecialty practice in the nation, where integrated medical care is provided at its best. I am also honored to practice with a team of other talented Hematologists/Oncologists and a group of dedicated and compassionate nurses and staff. We work together with the goal of providing the highest quality of care to you and your family. I strongly believe in empowering my patients and their families with knowledge regarding their diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options. I also value the partnership we form in making decisions in managing your condition. Besides the standard treatment options, I also believe that the clinical advances in eventually making cancer a curable disease can not be made without basic and clinical research. And at Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek, we offer many national clinical trials which may define the future treatment for different variety of cancers. Besides general oncology, I have special interest in breast cancer and gynecology related cancers. I am also a member of American Society of Clinical Oncology. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family. I am married to a physician who also works for Kaiser Permanente. We have two wonderful children. My biggest joy is to attend their many after school activities, soccer, swimming, drawing, and music lessons.
