Learning to Eat Again

After surgery it takes time for your GI tract to get used to its newly altered anatomy.

After a partial gastrectomy, some advice includes:

  • eat very small meals (snacks) frequently
  • start with Soft Foods

[edit] Maintaining Your Weight

Eating enough calories to maintain a reasonable weight may be a challenge after GI tract surgery. After all, the Roux-en-Y gastrectomy often used for GIST resection is also used as a gastric bypass for morbidly obese patients! Here are some tips from our list members:

  • Plenty of Protein

Protein powders, including soy protein and whey protein, can be stirred into hot cereal, smoothie drinks, etc. These provide protein without the digestive challenge of meat. Yogurt is also good.

  • Fat Maximizes Calories

Fats contain twice as many calories by weight as carbohydrates or proteins... What kinds of fats do you enjoy? Suggestions include:

    • add butter or oleo to all vegetables, breads
    • try cream on your cereal
    • use mayonnaise or salad dressings (as a bonus you can use canola mayonnaise or a better ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fats)
    • eat nuts. If whole nuts are a problem, grind them finely and sprinkle on food, or make them into nut butter.
    • cheeses: check to see if the cheese is made from whole milk
    • olives (a good source of omega-9 fatty acid, especially healthy)
    • bacon
    • candy such as caramels or chocolate
  • Juices and Fruits

Healthy, easy to get down (especially if fruits are blended into smoothies), and packing some calories.
