One GIST patient remarked as follows about his experience at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville:
The Mayo Clinic was great for me. The doctors are very thorough and they are all very supportive. I think one thing that is important to note is that ALL the doctors at the Mayo are on SALARY... they take the time to do it right. Now with the new hospital opening on their campus - it's going to be a really nice facility.
The other thing that was important for me was the Mayo is part of the CIGNA HMO Network -- that is my HMO ...
I also had Dr. Smith do my surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Jax...I would highly recommend him - he head's up Mayo's surgery department and is very easy to talk with, too. He did the surgery Laproscopically - so I have minimal scars. I had 2 GIST tumors in my small intestines that were removed last May.
Mayo will be opening their new hospital at the Mayo Campus in early April. They presently use St. Luke's Hospital (which is about 12 miles from the Mayo Campus.)
Dr. Stark is also a great GI Doctor and helped me tremendously. He's one of the few GI doctors that will do the "Double Balloon Endoscopy" - which it turned out I needed, too.
