I am always anxious to 'scope out' medical folks within 100 miles of me who may/may not have some extensive knowledge of GIST. Through a friend, I was able to spend a little time today with a doctor of oncology/radiology at the Robert Boissoneault Oncology Institute. He is Dr. Joseph Bennett and he has offices both in Lecanto and Inverness, both very close to the Beverly Hills/Crystal River/Dunnelon area. He was surprisingly knowledgeable and about GIST and the targeted therapies used against it and seemed eager for me to allow him onto my care team in collaboration with any oncological specialist I may choose from my Dr's George, Garrett, or even D'Amato or Demetri, and he knows them all. He also is of the school of second opinions, which is very comforting. I like the idea and perceived only a little weakness in the area of mutational testing but he seems very up-to-speed on Gleevec, Sutent and has two GIST patients from that area.
